To reduce manufacturing costs, our industry has introduced “wide” monitors. As a square moves to a rectangle, volume is reduced. Hence, small (wide) monitors are much cheaper to manufacture since there are fewer expensive surface chips required. For instance, a 19” square has about 180 square inches of display, a small “wide” monitor has only about 160 square inches of display, 20 square inches less; or stated differently, an area of 4 x 5 inches, larger than the size of a 3 x 5 card. Even thought the prices haven’t changed, they are cheaper to make, but have a lot less display presentation. Our industry is pretty clever, aren’t we?

However, what really matters most to users is the fact that these small monitors are much shorter. If you are watching movies at work, the smaller “wide” flat panel monitors are superb. They have a similar wide format as home theater screen TV’s. If however, you are one of those unfortunate people who must work while they are at work; the small “wide” flat LCD screens are very irritating. The way web pages and programs are laid out, one is always scrolling up and down. Hence a small “wide” flat panel monitor shows much less usefull area than a square large flat panel monitor.

In fact, to get the same height (about 12”) of a 19” “square” large flat panel monitor, you would have to go to a 22” small “wide” flat panel monitor. A 17” “square” large flat panel monitor is actually taller than the “19” “wide” flat panel. And still has about 90% of the display area in a more useful layout. If one really wanted to kick the work out, then go to dual large square flat panel monitors.

Conclusion: the monitor to your computer is like the windshield to your car. If you want to see, get a square flat panel monitor, if you like looking through a slot like driving a tank, get a small “wide” monitor; unless of course you watch movies at work.
